Daymé Arocena’s work encompasses the rich, diverse musical make-up of the Cuba she grew up in. Rooting her compositions in Cuba’s classic rhythms, she looks outward to the world she’s spent the past two years travelling.
Out on Brownswood Recordings, ‘Para Mover Los Pies’ is an ode to Daymé’s new home of San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is a song which fuses local Boricua rhythms with Cuban traditions.
“This is a song of healing and gratitude, because through it I healed the deepest sores of emigration and balanced my feelings to receive in my heart a new island to call home,” she explains.
Meanjin (Brisbane) based artist Hannah Macklin releases her new single, The Essence, and announces her debut LP, Mu on Hopestreet Recordings. The Essence is a slow burning, joyful piece of neo-soul that builds from a sparse beginning to near-orchestral intensity. Soaring strings and and rich keyboards are supported by punchy drums and bass and arranged around the centerpiece of Hannah’s luminous vocals. From the opening lyrics, ““If you could look into my heart, you would see that I love hard,” to the chorus of “I will never stop calling love The Essence” Hannah’s intentions are clear. In her words: “I felt the world needed a song written from this place. It’s a love song but it’s not about me or for me; it’s for everyone and everything…” Hannah, a multi-instrumentalist, also plays organ on the track and the string arrangements are her own. Of her arrangement Hannah says: “Musically, the song’s form and harmonic structure is rotational and evolving; it doubles back on itself with small additions, repeating slightly larger sections each time. This was a purposeful choice and carefully crafted to evoke a feeling of infinity.” The Essence is the second single from Mu, following Stars, which was released in February. Mu is a glittering journey through cosmic orchestral neo-soul where jazz-informed vocals and production merge with triphop and prog influences, joining the dots between Homegenic era Bjork or Portishead and contemporary artists like Solange or Cleo Sol
In this vibrant earworm, Gavin Holligan paints a stark picture of his experiences of being the underdog. Gavin is no stranger to thought provoking lyrics, with previous releases like “More Than One”, and more recently, “This Hotel Is Closed” & “Same Old Story”- which were both playlisted by Jazz FM and other key tastemaker stations.
Masterfully blending soulful vocals, jazz coloured instrumentation, and compelling storytelling, this track is sure to add further legitimacy to Gavin’s growing reputation as a credible UK talent. The song cleverly nods to his notable history as a former pro footballer, whilst the lyrics tell a poignant tale of defiance and outward bravado. “This track has always been a firm favourite to perform live – audiences absolutely love it! ” says Gavin Holligan about his boisterous uptempo piece.
Born and raised in South London, Gavin Holligan’s music could easily be described as an ‘authentic mix of soul, jazz and folk’, quality music that is sure to stand the test of time. Gavin Holligan is driven to continue captivating audiences with his unique musical prowess. The dynamic singer songwriter is known for bringing sensory, raw, and honest narratives to music, delivering performances that reach every listener, and this track is definitely that in abundance.
This single has been given the remix treatment from soulful house producer Richard Earnshaw (Defected, Reel People, Jocelyn Brown, Roy Ayers), whose stylish production pairs well with Gavin’s powerful vocal.
“Oscillate” is a blistering, hard-hitting meld of infectious rhythms that encapsulates the blossoming sonics of the Berlin jazz-electro scene.
In mid 2022 Alex travelled from Australia to Berlin to make the record, where he assembled a dream team crew of creative innovators featuring Hungarian keyboard player Àbáse, Australian bass guru Horatio Luna, and Brazilian flautista Paulo Cedraz. Together the group cut six unique dance tracks at Berlin’s iconic Jazzanova Studios, engineered by Grammy nominated Axel Reinemer.
Previously working w/ Grammy nominee Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah on 2020 LP “HEARTBEAT” and 2022’s “The Space Between,” 2023 finds Alexander aligning w/ Berlin’s Jakarta Records to release LP “Oscillate”
Oscillate represents movement. Movement of the body, movement of the soul. This is dance music that synthesizes club music and jazz, bringing together Australian and European energies leaning on house music, broken beat, DnB, funk, experimental music, and live improvisation. This is music for the body.

Bala Desejo -Mr Bongo RecordsSim Sim Sim’ is the Latin Grammy award-winning debut album from Bala Desejo. A band who are at the forefront of Rio de Janeiro’s artistic renaissance, they channel influences of Brazilian 60s Tropicália, 70s psychedelia and MPB to create a nostalgic, yet joyfully, avant-garde sound.
The band is comprised of four distinct characters, each one an incredible talent in their own right and each with impressive credentials in the Brazilian Independent music scene. Central to the resurgent Rio de Janeiro musical community, the quartet of Dora Morelenbaum, Julia Mestre, Lucas Nunes and Zé Ibarra thrive in a group dynamic. They formed Bala Desejo to play collaboratively for a festival date in 2021, but when that show became a victim of pandemic shutdowns the idea for an album project materialised.
‘Sim Sim Sim’, which translates into English as ‘Yes Yes Yes’, weaves through a fusion of genres, taking twists and turns as it progresses. There is Tropicália, MPB, rock, samba-canção soul-funk and reggae in the mix. It possesses many of the qualities of a classic album from Brazilian music’s golden era of the 60s and 70s, but also manages to sound very now, which is not an easy task to pull off. As solo musicians, they have worked and collaborated with Brazilian icons Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso and Milton Nascimento to name but a few. Bala Desejo feels like a natural extension of what came before, taking the baton from these luminaries, adding their unique spin and moving the sound forward.

There’s so much good new music out there, it’s hard to keep up! Digital technology makes accessibility much much easier but also more proliferative! So we’ve curated a show that brings the art of crate diggin into the modern dynamic where only the best new music we come across gets featured. Without specialist shows of this nature, the artist/label are in the impossible situation of trying to self promote and standout in an increasingly saturated, competitive and AI-influenced marketplace. We want to lend a hand, or should that be an ear, to the art of curating a good new music show whilst introducing you to some of the amazingly talented artists and musicians out there.
The show is live-streamed on the 1st Sunday of each month and is broadcast every day on LiQUORiCE.FM
